Their masticating little mandibles
chew in unison
as the air grows leaden and thick.
That awful scream ricocheted off the picket fences
their sharp white teeth
already bared in maniacal grins.
You rushed outside
short-stepped and agitated
jittery-yells and shouted.
Oh how little Sahklava from next door screamed
like some wretched sea-monster, calling on her vulpine mother
flappity flap she descended upon you.
I heard you yelling some more
& I heard the sniffling sea-monster, unscathed
pink skin unscratched and bloodless,
lurking by mother-vultures trouser leg.
I suspected melodrama
yet, I opened up my laptop
& looked at nice places in Arizona we could live.
